What is a Tankless Water Heater?
A tankless water heater is an energy-efficient water heating system that heats water only when it’s needed. This type of water heater can supply virtually endless amounts of hot water to multiple appliances simultaneously, without fluctuations in temperature. TPD, your San Antonio plumbing company, supplies Rinnai, a world leader in tankless water heaters.

Why Go Tankless?
An endless stream of hot water, and up to 40% in savings in energy costs are just two great reasons to select an energy-efficient tankless water heater over a conventional tank-style water heater.

For those who want to “go green,” tankless water heaters prevent the loss of standby water and reduce energy consumption, as they heat water only as it is needed. They can also be located closer to the point of use, which helps to reduce water wasted while you’re waiting for hot water to arrive at the fixtures. Tankless water heaters can last up to 20 years, and, due to their smaller size, produce less waste for landfills.

What is the Cost for Tankless?
The purchase and installation of a tankless water heater can easily be 3 to 4 times more than a conventional tank-style water heater, and homeowners should take this into account when evaluating the possibility of purchasing a tankless water heater. However, a tankless water heater is considered by many to be a better long-term investment when the energy savings and longevity of the tankless water heater are considered.

Other Considerations for Tankless
TPD Plumbing always recommends that customers have a water softener before installing a tankless water heater. Heated water is much more reactive, and the corrosive nature of minerals can be very damaging to tankless heaters.
We do not recommend electric tankless water heaters when they are to be used for the entire household. This is due to the tremendous pull on electrical power required to provide “instant” hot water. Electrical installations of this type would require at least two 220 volt outlets.
